Dale Steyn is a professional International cricketer who plays for South Africa. He is one of the fast bowlers who can clock 150kmph bowling speed consistently in the cricket history. Born on 27 June 1983, he did his schooling from Merensky High School in Tzaneen, South Africa. He made his Test debut in 2004 in the home series against England after he impressed Ray Jennings with his pace and stamina with total experience of only 7 first class games. Though he failed to make a significant impact in his debut test match and took just 8 wickets in 3 Test series. But he continued to be in radar and made his comeback for another home series against New Zealand in 2006. Worry of not getting another chance, he bowled with more accuracy and made his impressive mark with 16 wickets in 3 Test matches.

  • On 17 December 2004, he made his debut for South Africa in the first test against team England.
  • His overall performance in his debut match was not very impressive and so he was dropped after bowling poorly in England’s second innings of the fourth Test in January 2005.
  • On 20 January 2006, he made his ODI debut against Australia in a match which was part of 2005-06 VB Series. In that match as well, he didn’t perform well and after another below level performance against Sri Lanka, Steyn was dropped out of consideration from the team.
  • Later that same year, he was recalled to play in Test match against New Zealand. Worrying it as his biggest last opportunity, he responded well by taking his first five-wicket haul in the first Test at Centurion.
  • From years 2008-2014, he was ranked on top of the ICC rankings.
  • In 2014, he made his acting debut by playing a small role in movie “Blended”.
  • He recorded his 400th wicket in just his 80th game and became the second South African after Shaun Pollock to set this record. This world record is however, a little slower than Muttiah Muralitharan (who achieved the record in 72nd games).
  • For his performance in Cricket, he was named in the World Test XI by ICC in 2008 and 2009.
  • Coming from a middle class family, he worked very hard to achieve things in life.
  • Steyn is known to be one of the fastest bowlers in Cricket.

Early Days

With his own share of struggles while growing up, he made his first-class debut in 2003 for Northerns. His strong performance in First class cricket led him being called up to play against England in Test series in 2004. However, his lukewarm performance in his debut match led to his exclusion from the team until January 2005.

After bring dropped from the team, he went to play country cricket for Essex in 2005 and played 2005 first class cricket season. His amazing performance in the domestic match grabbed selectors attention towards him and he was taken back in the team again to the test series against New Zealand in 2006. In that very match, he took his career’s first five-wicket haul with 16 wickets in the series at average of 26.00.

In no time from that day, he impressed everyone with his performance. Later in 2007, he played extra ordinarily well and fixed his place in the team. His first astonishing performance came against New Zealand where he took 20 wickets with average of 9.20. After this, he kept on growing in stature in the history of world cricket.

It is quite evident that bowlers are more prone to injuries. Dale Steyn being no different got injured a lot. Despite keeping himself absolutely fit, he has suffered many injuries since 2015. He has been in and out from the time for many times. One of his longest shoulder injury took almost fourteen months to recover.

The cricketer made headlines in the news one time after he was involved in verbal spat with Michael Clarke. This spat made a huge controversy and Clarke even apologized later to him for passing personal comments but Steyn still holds grudge against him.
